In the early 1980's, Dennis Tueller was conducting firearms training for the Salt Lake City Police Department. During one training session, he was asked about the use of deadly force against someone armed with a contact weapon like a knife or club. "At what point is the person close enough that I am justified in using deadly force to stop them?"
It was determined that moving gave the officer a better chance of containing the situation.
